Polytonic Writing System

Introductory Note

This Guide aims to assist in successfully dealing with the incompatibility that many electronic environments present in producing written discourse with the Greek polytonic writing system.

The Guide provides information and support, with instructions on searching, installing, and using software that guarantees the readability and employment of Greek polytonic fonts on the most widespread operating systems (Windows, Macintosh, Linux) and computers and their most widely-employed applications (word processing, Web browsers, e-mail).

Users have at their disposal the information they need, collected and arranged in thematic lists, so that they are able to deal with technical problems that make the use of the Greek polytonic writing system difficult in electronic environments. If necessary, there is reference to other websites available for more specialized and detailed guides.

In addition, the Guide provides an updated and informative list of links to websites offering free download and installation of polytonic fonts, as well as comprehensive information (from a historical and encyclopedic perspective) on the Greek writing system.
